Amber Rudd took Richard Benyon MP, Minister for Fisheries and the Natural Environment on a visit around the local sea defences and to the Rye harbour development on August 31st.
“I thought it was important for the Minister to see what has been achieved on the sea defences along the coast and how vital it is that we continue to invest in our coast line to protect our communities and our natural environment,” said Amber. “A lot of work has been done from Fairlight through Pett and up to Rye and it needs to continue,” she added.
Escorted by the Environment Agency, Amber Rudd and the Minister went from Winchelsea beach along to Rye Harbour to see the progess being made and the defences already in place.
In Rye they joined the Harbour-Master Carl Bagwell to hear about the commercial side of the Harbour and to look at the improvements on Simmons Quay. Carl commented, “It really was pleasing that the Minister, MP and senior officers of the Environment Agency took the time to visit Rye and learn of our Maritime Heritage and present day activities”
Amber added, “The improvements to the Harbour have been essential both for the commercial side of the harbour’s activities with visiting boats and also for sustaining our local fisheries. The natural environment and fisheries are two sides to the same coin. We need to preserve both to sustain the commercial life of our communities.”
